Kinja'd!!!

I bought a aftermarket steering wheel/hub/quick release combo off ebay soon after I bought my Miata earlier this year. I have big legs and have a hard time getting under the stock one. I hesitated on installing it because putting in an aftermarket wheel classes you out of street category in Solo and I didn't want to move to a faster class just for a wheel. Well my autocross progress is on hold for the time being so I decided I'd install it for the time being. Well these wheels are as cheap as everyone says. It's hard to tell until you install it but I am terrified of bending it pulling on the wheel at all. I feel comfortable with the hub and quick release so far but I definitely want to spend the extra cash on a nicer wheel.

Lol that lead one is hilarious because it actually says JDM on it.

The second picture (the one I assume you actually bought) seems much more tasteful.

..... The top one is the one I bought but it has a black horn button. This was around $40 for wheel+hub+quick release with the goal of the smallest diameter wheel I can get. The smaller diameter didn't really help so I for the next wheel I am just going to buy what I want, probably something like the bottom wheel.

Oh.

The top wheel is a little too ricer for me.

I think what your looking for is actually a flat bottomed steering wheel. Gtspec makes one for the sti... I'm sure sparco/momo/nardi make a universal one.

It was more of a size and price thing than style.

I'm not worried about wheel style or size anymore I just want something that's good quality.

Possibly a flat-bottom? I have the same problem as you, to the point that I've just taken the 1-st gen Miata off my To Buy list and replaced it with the AW11 MR2, which I DO fit into with respectable amounts of room between the wheel bottom and my legs.

I've come to realize the trick is just getting in. Once I'm in I'm fine except for keeping my hands at the same position at an autocross. Kind of hard not to shuffle when there's no room left. For those reasons I don't think a flat bottom will really help. Honestly I've gotten so good at getting in and out with the stock wheel it feels awkward without it. The easiest solution is just never put the top up and basically step into the car.

My problem was left-foot braking and heel-toe downshifts. My legs would, without fail, become smushed into the bottom of the steering wheel, which you obviously making minor steering corrections during these times difficult. Also makes trail-braking through a turn nigh-upon impossible unless I'm doing the Forceful Shuffle, haha.
